Hello friends!
I wrote this poem on request of one elderly lady. Original poem is in hindi along with my attempt to translate it in english. Hope you will enjoy it too.
Tied up with rope of Maya
My pure white soul
Started It’s journey
From that side of shore
The packet of my life reached
My mother’s warm lap
Where my life was complete
In her sweet lullabies rap
Affection of my father
And love of siblings
My childhood flew away
Laughing and kidding
That was a golden era
Of my life’s beautiful season
Free of greed or desires
It was light like feather
It evaporated like scent and
I reached adolescence
With enormous questions
And doubts in my heart
I was a keen learner
Right from the start
I did many mistakes
In my learning haste
But still that packet of life
Was innocent and bright!
With enthusiasm and gleam
I reached my teens
That life was full of love
With never ending dreams
Right or wrong
Lost their sense
The packet of my life
Became heavy and dull
The time flew soon
And I reached life’s noon
Under burden of life
I became responsible and wise
My kids and my wife
Were now part of my life
Slowly life became a challenge
And to meet my needs
I used many tactics
Packet of my life
Got some more dirt
But I never got time
To review its worth
Days turned in months
And months in years
I handed my responsibility
To my daughters and sons
I reached that period
Which was for rest and peace
Then I realised
That in my speed
To discover life
I never enjoyed little moments
And lost that gift
Received from heaven
Packet of my life
Is now tattered with rifts
While I’m so close
And anxiously awaiting
To meet God’s light
After I damaged
This packet of my life!
But why should he come
To clean this dirt
Which I accumulated
Over all these years!!
बहुत सुन्दर रचना है….
जीवन के सत्य को दर्शाती हुई।

Beautiful! I am lucky that you have a translation in English but I think the fonts in the original are wonderful just to look at. What script is it? How would my name Gunnar look in such a script?😊

Haha…I’m glad you like it. Original poem is better than its translation. This is hindi and your name will appear as गुनर 😃

That was very beautiful Meenakshi!
Your words took me back, in early years of my life. Also for the reminding sweetness of Hindi. 🙂

There was a Hindi film ‘Ek Muthhi Aasman’, released perhaps before you were born, with the son (forgot his name) of yester years’ villain Jeevan, as the hero.
I was also reminded of Shahir Ludhianvi’s “Gar isiko jeena kehte hai, youn hi jee lenge, uff na karenge, lab see lenge, aansoo pee lenge.” Some lines of Hindi/Urdu poetry are so deeply routed in Oriental thought that they cannot be translated – that is why I said your Hindi poems are better. The only really great such translation is Edward Fitzgerald’s translation of Omar Khayyam’s ‘Rubaiyat’ with classic lines ;like “…the moving finger writes, and having writ moves on, Not all thy piety nor wit can lure it back to cancel half a line.:nor all thy tears wash out a word of it.” One lifetime is not enough to read all the good works.

That’s very true! Hindi or any other language is sweet in itself. Translation kills the soul of it.
Thank you for sharing your insights sir!!
